CCDPH is sharing an important health alert issued by the CDC to notify public health professionals, clinicians, and people at risk for overdose about recent changes in the drug supply that may increase the risk of overdose in suburban Cook County.
A substance called medetomidine, a sedative intended for veterinary use, is being detected in the U.S. drug supply and is often mixed with fentanyl.

CCDPH does not test drugs directly. However, we are actively working with partners to monitor trends and share timely information.
We continue to provide naloxone kits and offer community education on overdose prevention and response.
