Medetomidine in the U.S. Fentanyl Supply Increasing Risk for Overdose and Severe Withdrawal Syndrome

April 3, 2026

CCDPH is sharing an important health alert issued by the CDC to notify public health professionals, clinicians, and people at risk for overdose about recent changes in the drug supply that may increase the risk of overdose in suburban Cook County.

What You Need to Know

A substance called medetomidine, a sedative intended for veterinary use, is being detected in the U.S. drug supply and is often mixed with fentanyl.

This combination can lead to:

  • Prolonged sedation
  • Slowed heart rate
  • Severe withdrawal symptoms
  • Increased risk of death

Even when naloxone is used, individuals may remain heavily sedated and require additional medical care.

Key Safety Messages

We encourage you to share the following information with the communities you serve:

  • Naloxone will only be effective if opioids are involved
  • Carry naloxone and be prepared to use it
  • When using naloxone, remember: Lay, Spray, Stay
  • Administer naloxone immediately if someone is not breathing and repeat doses as needed
  • Always call 911 in the event of an overdose (say the person is "unresponsive")
  • Do not use alone and avoid mixing substances
  • Be aware that recovery may take longer than expected due to additional substances

Additional Support

  • Free naloxone is available at sites across suburban Cook County
  • Organizations can request naloxone or training by contacting CCDPH

Recognizing Severe Withdrawal

Seek immediate medical care if someone experiences:

  • Chest pain
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Confusion
  • Changes in alertness

Important Note

CCDPH does not test drugs directly. However, we are actively working with partners to monitor trends and share timely information.

We continue to provide naloxone kits and offer community education on overdose prevention and response.
